SF Giants Rumors / Trade Rumors 2011: Only Torres Left Unsigned, Suppan Joins the Fold

The Realistic Giants Fan: Arbitration Avoided, Spring is Coming

As expected the Giants are going to avoid arbitration. It's pretty much that way league wide. Of the over 200 arbitration cases last year only 11 actually met before the arbitrator. This week saw the signings of Cody Ross, Ramon Ramirez, Johnathon Sanchez and Javier Lopez. That leaves only Andres Torres, but it's a nearly foregone conclusion that he will be signed before the deadline. What it's coming down to is this team is going to have a very similar look to the team that ended last season. That is indeed a good thing. I, personally, am looking forward to getting full seasons from some of our mid-to-late season pickups.

Apparently Pablo Sandoval is keeping to his exercise and diet regiments. A picture has surfaced of a trimmer Pablo, although without a side shot it doesn't really prove anything completely. It does seem, though, that Pablo is taking all of this seriously. It's no doubt that he was embarassed last year and didn't exactly live up to the large amount of money that was spent to promote his Panda persona. In a recent short, surface only, interview, Pablo said that fans can expect that, "A new Panda will be back to help his team win another World Series in 2011." The Giants have added Jeff Suppan to the fold. I think it's a good move as it is a minor league deal and only costs us $1 MM if he makes the big league squad. One thing that was noticeably missing last year was a true long reliever / swingman. I think that had been the original role that was intended for Todd Wellemeyer. That and light a fire underneath Madison Bumgarner, which it didn't seem to do. It ended up working out that Wellemeyer got the 5th starter spot and then was jettisoned when Bumgarner came up to replace him when he was injured. Then the Giants moved Joe Martinez. Luckily, down the stretch a long reliever was not needed and that in the one situation where it was needed, Bumgarner was able to go out and throw 2 innings against Philadelphia in Game 6 of the NLCS. Also, we can't forget the 2 beautiful innings thrown by Jeremy Affeldt.

Just 24 days until Spring Training and there is a cluster you know what in the outfield, so it should be a fun camp to observe. Fan Fest is on Saturday the 5th. Short offseasons are awesome!

  1. Man Suppan is completely washed up but to a minor league deal as long as he doesn't become a distraction I am cool with it.
